Known failures
Problem
W211 with SBC, 2003–2006: Red brake warning with Service Brake Visit Workshop, then a hard pedal with long stopping distances.
Likely cause
The SBC hydraulic unit counts actuations and shuts itself down at a limit, or its pump and accumulator wear out ahead of that count.
The fix
Unit replaced and coded, or the counter reset alone when the pump and pressure tests pass; Mercedes extended coverage on the unit to 25 years in 2018.
SBC Brake System RepairProblem
W211 E500, E55 and Airmatic-equipped cars, 2003–2009: Car sits low on one corner overnight and the compressor runs every time the door opens.
Likely cause
Air struts crack at the rolling bellows, and a compressor that works overtime to cover the leak overheats and loses output; the relay often sticks and finishes it off.
The fix
Leaking strut replaced, compressor and relay tested under load and replaced if weak, ride height calibrated in XENTRY.
Airmatic Air Suspension RepairProblem
W211 E350 and E550 with M272 and M273, 2006–2008: Check engine light with P0016 on bank 1 (M272) or P0017 on bank 2 (M273) and no obvious noise.
Likely cause
Balance shaft sprocket on the M272 and the idler gear on the M273 were made from a soft alloy that wears its teeth and retards cam timing.
The fix
Engine removed or lowered, balance shaft or idler gear replaced with hardened parts along with the chain and guides.
M272/M273 Balance Shaft and Timing Chain RepairProblem
W211 and W212 with the 722.9, 2005–2011: Limp mode in second gear, no reverse when hot, or harsh downshifts near a stop.
Likely cause
Hall-effect speed sensors in the conductor plate fail once the fluid gets hot, the classic 2004–2010 fault.
The fix
Conductor plate replaced with filter and fluid, coded online, adaptations reset and relearned on the road.
722.9 7G-Tronic Transmission Service and RepairProblem
W211 and W212 with M272 and M273, 2006–2011: Oil on the garage floor, a burning smell after a drive, or coolant mixed with oil in the worst cases.
Likely cause
The oil cooler seals between the valley oil cooler and the block harden with heat cycles, and the valve cover gaskets follow.
The fix
Intake manifold off, oil cooler seals replaced, valve covers resealed in the same visit while access is open.
M272/M273 Oil Leak RepairProblem
W212 with the M276, 2012–2016: Startup rattle lasting one to two seconds and camshaft adjuster codes that return after clearing.
Likely cause
The M276 camshaft adjusters lose their locking pins and the chain tensioner bleeds down overnight.
The fix
Adjusters replaced with updated parts, chain and tensioner inspected and replaced if stretched.
XENTRY DiagnosticsProblem
W213 E350 and E450, 2020–2023: Yellow 48V warning, start-stop disabled, or the engine shutting down at a light and refusing to restart.
Likely cause
The belt starter-generator on the M264 or the integrated unit on the M256 falls out of tolerance, or the 48V battery and converter age in the heat.
The fix
Guided test of the 48V system in XENTRY, then the generator, battery or converter replaced and coded; engine mounts checked because a collapsed mount loads the belt drive.
XENTRY DiagnosticsSensotronic Brake Control was a brake-by-wire system fitted to the W211 through the 2006 model year. The hydraulic unit stores pressure in an accumulator and applies the brakes electronically, and Mercedes programmed it to shut down after a set number of actuations because the pump wears. When the counter is reached or the pump weakens, the car throws Service Brake Visit Workshop and the pedal goes hard with only mechanical backup.
Airmatic on the E500 and E55 adds a second system that wears by cycle count rather than mileage. Every time a strut leaks, the compressor runs longer to maintain height, and a compressor that runs constantly overheats its piston seal. Dallas owners notice it on the first cool morning, when a car that looked fine all summer is sitting on its bump stops.
Both systems are repairable and both have a diagnostic path that avoids guesswork. SBC counters and pump pressures are readable in XENTRY, and a leak-down test on each air strut isolates which corner is bleeding before anything is ordered. The late W211, 2007 through 2009, dropped SBC for conventional brakes and is the one to look for if you want the chassis without that system.
The M272 V6 arrived in the 2006 E350 and the M273 V8 in the 2007 E550, and both engines in that first run carry a soft balance shaft sprocket or idler gear. The teeth wear, cam timing retards on the affected bank and the ECU logs a correlation code. Mercedes extended coverage for the earliest cars to 10 years or 125,000 miles, but every W211 is past that now, so the repair is on the owner.
Beyond the gear, both engines leak from the oil cooler seals under the intake manifold and from the valve covers. The seals live in the valley of the V where heat is trapped, and they harden until oil runs down the back of the block. Owners smell it before they see it. We reseal the cooler and the covers in one visit because the intake is already off.
By 2012 the W212 moved to the M276, a direct-injection engine with its own weakness in the camshaft adjusters. The locking pins wear, the adjusters clatter on startup and the codes come back no matter how often they are cleared. The fix is updated adjusters, and we inspect the chain for stretch at the same time so the repair is done once.
On a 2003–2006 W211 ask for the SBC counter reading, which we can pull in XENTRY in a few minutes. A unit near its limit is a known cost even if the brakes feel fine today. On any Airmatic car, park it overnight if you can and measure the fender heights in the morning; a corner that dropped is a strut, and a compressor that runs for more than a minute at startup is tired.
For M272 and M273 cars, check the engine serial against the known cutoff and look for a prior balance shaft or idler gear invoice. Then scan for stored P0016 and P0017 codes. For W212 M276 cars, listen for the startup rattle and ask whether the adjusters have been replaced. On any 722.9 car, drive it long enough for the fluid to get hot and then try reverse from a stop.
For W213 cars with 48V, verify that start-stop actually works, because a seller may have disabled it to hide a tired battery or a generator fault. Check the air suspension if fitted, and confirm the engine mounts are not collapsed by feeling for vibration at idle in Drive with the A/C on.
The W213 moved the E-Class to the 9G-Tronic and, from 2020, to the M264 with a 48V belt starter-generator. That generator replaces the alternator and the starter, drives the air conditioning compressor electrically on some cars and is tensioned by the same belt as the water pump. A failing unit can leave the car unable to restart at a light with the A/C already off, which in July is noticed quickly.
The M256 inline-six in the E450 uses an integrated starter-generator between the engine and transmission and an electric auxiliary compressor. It is a strong engine with a short list of complaints, but 48V battery health and software levels decide how it behaves, and both are read and updated through XENTRY with the OEM subscription.
Air Body Control on the W213 and the W214 air suspension are Airmatic descendants with the same wear items: struts, compressor and valve block. We diagnose them with the same leak-down and compressor run-time tests we use on a W211, then calibrate ride height after the repair. The W214 adds rear-axle steering on some cars, which needs calibration whenever an alignment is done.
Long idle periods on I-635 and the Tollway keep transmission fluid hot, and hot fluid is what pushes a marginal 722.9 conductor plate over the edge. It is also what cooks the rubber in hydraulic engine mounts and the seals in the valley of an M272. Many of the E-Class repairs we do on commuter cars with modest mileage trace back to heat soak rather than distance.
Air suspension compressors and 48V batteries both run hotter here than in a cooler climate, and both have shorter lives as a result. We check compressor run time and battery state of health as part of Service B on equipped cars, so a weak component is caught before it strands the car. Repairs are covered for 2 years parts and 2 years labor, up to 24,000 miles, nationwide; for a quote on a specific fault, email service@mercedesbenzrepair.net.

Questions
Mercedes extended coverage on the SBC hydraulic unit to 25 years with no mileage limit in 2018, which covers every W211 built with the system through at least 2028. Coverage applies at a dealer and is specific to the unit itself. We can confirm the fault and read the counter so you know whether a claim or an independent repair makes more sense.
The affected M272 engines were built from 2004 through 2008 with serial numbers below the published cutoff, and the symptom is a P0016 code on bank 1 with no noise. We check your engine serial against the cutoff and inspect the cam timing deviation in XENTRY. If deviation is growing, the sprocket is wearing even if the light has not come on yet.
That is the 722.9 conductor plate. Its speed sensors drift with temperature, so the transmission works cold and then loses a signal once the fluid is hot, which the ECU answers by locking out gears. A plate replacement with fresh fluid, online coding and an adaptation reset returns the shifting to normal.
Airmatic work on a W211 or W212 runs $450–$2,400 per repair here. A compressor relay is at the low end, a compressor sits in the middle, and a strut is $1,100–$2,200 per corner depending on whether the car has adaptive damping. We test every corner before quoting so one leak does not become four struts.
Yes. We read the 48V battery state of health, the integrated starter-generator data and the DC/DC converter in XENTRY, perform the guided tests Mercedes specifies and replace components with the VIN coding they require. Software updates for the 48V control modules go through the OEM subscription, the same path a dealer uses.
