Known failures
Problem
CLA C117 with the 7G-DCT, 2014–2019: Shudder pulling away from a stop, a pause before the car moves, or a lurch into second gear in slow traffic.
Likely cause
The dual-clutch pack and its mechatronic unit wear fastest in creep conditions, and fluid that has never been changed accelerates it.
The fix
Fluid and filter service with clutch adaptation reset first; clutch pack or mechatronic replacement when the adaptation values are out of range.
XENTRY DiagnosticsProblem
CLA C117 and C118 with M270 and M260, 2014–: Short rattle at startup, a check engine light with camshaft position codes, or oil at the front of the engine below the timing cover.
Likely cause
Camshaft adjuster and chain tensioner wear, the transverse version of the problems reported on the M274, plus a timing cover seal that weeps.
The fix
Cam deviation measured in XENTRY, adjusters and tensioner replaced as indicated, timing cover resealed.
XENTRY DiagnosticsProblem
CLA C117, 2014–2019: Auxiliary battery malfunction message with start-stop disabled.
Likely cause
The small backup battery that supports the start-stop system has a short life in the heat and the voltage converter sometimes follows it.
The fix
Auxiliary battery replaced, converter tested, message cleared and start-stop verified working.
XENTRY DiagnosticsProblem
CLS C219, 2006 model year: Red brake warning and a hard pedal, the same Service Brake Visit Workshop message as the W211.
Likely cause
The 2006 CLS kept the SBC electro-hydraulic brake unit with its actuation counter and pump wear.
The fix
SBC unit replaced and coded, or a counter reset when pump pressure tests pass; the 25-year extended coverage applies to these cars.
SBC Brake System RepairProblem
CLS550 C219 with the M273, 2007–2008: Bank 2 cam correlation code with no drivability complaint.
Likely cause
Soft idler gear in the early M273 timing drive, the same part that fails on the W221 S550 of the same years.
The fix
Idler gear and chain set replaced with hardened parts through the timing cover.
M272/M273 Balance Shaft and Timing Chain RepairProblem
CLS C219 and C218 with Airmatic, 2007–2018: Rear end low after a night in the garage, or the compressor cycling on every drive.
Likely cause
Rear air springs on these cars crack at the fold, and a compressor that keeps a leaking system up wears quickly.
The fix
Air spring or strut replaced, compressor build time tested, level calibration done in XENTRY.
Airmatic Air Suspension RepairProblem
CLS C219 and C218 with the 722.9, 2006–2014: Limp mode after highway driving, with the transmission stuck in a high gear at the next stop.
Likely cause
Conductor plate speed sensors fail with heat, the documented 722.9 fault.
The fix
Conductor plate or complete valve body with fresh fluid, online coding and adaptation reset.
722.9 7G-Tronic Transmission Service and RepairMercedes gave both cars the four-door coupe roofline, which is where the resemblance ends. The CLA is built on the front-drive A-Class platform with a transverse turbo four and a dual-clutch transmission, and its repair profile looks like a compact: clutch wear, small-engine timing noise and electrical complaints. The CLS sits on E-Class bones with a longitudinal V6 or V8, a torque-converter automatic and air suspension.
The practical result is two different price pictures. A CLA owner spends on transmission adaptation, auxiliary batteries and cam adjusters, with the big-ticket risk being a clutch pack. A CLS owner is looking at the W211 and W212 list: SBC on a 2006, balance gear on an early M273, 722.9 conductor plates and Airmatic struts. We cover both because the diagnostic tooling is the same even when the hardware is not, and because owners of one often ask us about the other when it is time to trade.
The 7G-DCT is a wet dual-clutch gearbox that has no torque converter. When you creep in traffic the clutches slip continuously, which generates heat, wears friction material and glazes the plates. A CLA that spends its weekdays on I-635 at walking pace puts more wear on its clutches in a year than a highway commuter does in three, and the first sign is a shudder as the car pulls away.
The fix depends on where the adaptation values sit. We service the fluid and filter, then reset and relearn the clutch adaptation in XENTRY. Many early shudder cases go away at that point because the control unit was compensating for old fluid. When the values are at their limits, or the mechatronic unit logs pressure faults, the clutch pack or the mechatronic needs replacement, and we quote that only after the data confirms it.
Prevention is the cheap option. Mercedes specifies a DCT fluid change interval, and on a Dallas car we treat 40,000 miles as the ceiling. Owners who creep in traffic can also help by coming to a full stop rather than rolling, since the clutches fully disengage at a stop and cool.
The 2006 CLS500 kept the SBC brake system from the W211 for one model year. It behaves exactly as it does on the sedan: the hydraulic unit counts actuations and eventually shuts itself off, or its pump wears first, and the car shows a red brake warning. Mercedes extended coverage on the unit to 25 years, so a 2006 CLS is still eligible at a dealer; we confirm the fault and read the counter so you know what you are dealing with.
From 2007 the CLS550 uses the M273 V8, and the 2007–2008 engines carry the soft idler gear that wears and retards bank 2 timing. There is no noise, just a correlation code, so an owner can drive for months without knowing. The repair goes through the timing cover and is a multi-day job. All M273 cars also leak from the valley oil cooler seals, which we reseal with the valve covers in one visit.
The 722.9 behind these engines has the conductor plate issue that peaked on 2004–2010 builds. A CLS that goes into limp mode after a long hot drive and is fine the next morning has a plate with heat-sensitive speed sensors. Replacement with coding and an adaptation reset is the cure, and a fluid service at the same time protects the new part.
On a CLA, drive it in traffic conditions, not on an empty road. Creep forward repeatedly from a stop and feel for shudder or a delay before the car moves. Listen for a rattle on a cold start and look under the front of the engine for oil at the timing cover. Confirm start-stop works, because an auxiliary battery message is the first sign of a system the seller may have ignored.
On a CLS, identify the model year and engine before anything else. A 2006 car has SBC; a 2007 or 2008 CLS550 has the early M273 idler gear; any 2006–2010 car has the vulnerable 722.9 plate. Park the car overnight if possible and measure the rear ride height in the morning, since the Airmatic rear springs are the ones that crack. Then have us read every module in XENTRY before you negotiate.
The CLA suffers from traffic more than from heat. Its clutches wear in creep, its auxiliary battery lives behind the dash where cabin heat soaks it, and its small engine runs oil temperature high with the air conditioning compressor loaded all summer. We check DCT adaptation values and battery health at Service B so the owner sees the trend before the shudder starts.
The CLS suffers from heat more than from traffic. The 722.9 plate fails hot, the M273 valley seals harden with underhood temperature, and Airmatic compressors work harder when the rubber springs are baked. Keeping the fluid fresh and catching air leaks early are the two habits that keep a Dallas CLS out of the big repairs. For either car, email service@mercedesbenzrepair.net and describe the symptom; we will tell you which test to start with.

How booking works
Covered for 2 years parts and 2 years labor, up to 24,000 miles, nationwide
Questions
Not necessarily. Shudder on the 7G-DCT often comes from degraded fluid and adaptation values that have drifted, and a fluid and filter service with a clutch relearn in XENTRY settles many cars. If the adaptation values are at their limits or the mechatronic unit logs pressure faults, the clutch pack is worn and we quote that repair from the data rather than from the symptom.
The CLA carries a small secondary battery that supports the electrical system during start-stop events. It sits in a hot location and typically lasts a few years in Dallas. When it weakens the car disables start-stop and shows the message. Replacing it is a quick job; we also test the voltage converter beside it, which fails less often but produces the same warning.
It can be. The SBC unit is covered by the Mercedes 25-year extension, and the car is otherwise a W211 E500 with the durable M113 V8 and no balance shaft concern. Have the SBC counter read and the brake pressure tests run before you buy so you know whether the unit is near its limit, and budget for 722.9 fluid service if it has never been done.
Yes. The 2007–2008 CLS550 uses the M273 V8 with the soft idler gear that wears and retards timing on bank 2. We confirm it by reading cam deviation in XENTRY and checking the engine serial against the known cutoff. If the gear is wearing, the repair runs $3,200–$5,000 and includes the chain and guides while the cover is off.
We recommend every 40,000 miles on a Dallas CLA, and sooner if the car spends most of its time in stop-and-go traffic. Fresh fluid keeps the wet clutches cool and the mechatronic solenoids clean, and the adaptation relearn we perform with the service restores take-up quality. It is the single most effective way to postpone a clutch pack replacement.
