Highland Park
Highland Park is two square miles of 1910s to 1930s estates along Armstrong Parkway, Beverly Drive and Lakeside Drive, with Highland Park Village at the Preston and Mockingbird corner and Turtle Creek along the south and west in 75219. Houses built with porte-cocheres and detached garages have been enlarged ever since, producing a town of three- and four-car households.
Those garages are where the interesting Mercedes-Benz work lives. A typical driveway has a current GLS or GLE for daily use, an S-Class W222 or W223, and then the vehicles kept rather than replaced: an R230 or R231 SL, a G-Class, sometimes a W140 or W126 in the family since new. Mileage is low and age is high.
That fleet puts us in a particular line of work. The S-Class has had Airmatic since the W220, the CL and SL carried Active Body Control from the C215 onward, and the 2003–2012 R230 SL used SBC brakes. Those three systems account for most of the four-figure estimates Highland Park owners bring us, and all three need calibration tooling rather than a scan tool.
There is a Mercedes dealer within a few miles on the Lemmon Avenue side, and most Highland Park owners have a relationship there. They come east for the cars the dealer would rather replace than repair, for a second opinion on a suspension estimate, and because they want one technician to know the whole garage.
Active Body Control is a high-pressure hydraulic system running through a tandem pump, valve blocks, pulsation dampers and accumulators, and struts with position sensors. When it fails it fails visibly: a W220 S600 or R230 SL55 sitting on its bump stops at the Village valet stand. Diagnosing it means pressure testing and the rodeo and calibration routines in XENTRY, not replacing the part that is wet.
An ABC strut is $1,400–$2,800 each, the tandem pump $1,500–$2,800, a valve block $900–$1,900, and a fluid and filter flush $350–$550. Airmatic on the S-Class is simpler: a strut is $1,100–$2,200 per corner and the compressor $700–$1,300. A car that levels within a minute of starting still has a healthy pump; one that takes five minutes does not.
Seals and rubber. The M272 V6 and M273 V8 fitted to 2006–2011 S-Class, CL and SL models weep from the oil cooler seals and valve cover gaskets; on a car driven to the club and back the leak collects on the exhaust as a burning smell in the garage. Oil cooler seals run $650–$1,100 and a pair of valve cover gaskets $550–$950.
On 2005–2008 M272 and M273 engines we also read the camshaft correlation codes for balance shaft wear. The R230 SL carries SBC brakes; Mercedes extended coverage on the hydraulic unit to 25 years in 2018, so that repair goes to a dealer, while pads and rotors at $450–$900 per axle are done here with the system deactivated in XENTRY.
Yes. Each vehicle gets its own file by VIN with the service intervals, the open items we have flagged and the estimates that were declined, so when the SL comes in for spring brake fluid we already know the G-Class is due for its B service in the autumn.
The drive is short enough to make this practical. From the Village, Mockingbird east through Lakewood to Buckner Boulevard and south into 75228 is fifteen to twenty minutes outside school-zone hours; from Lakeside Drive or Turtle Creek, Oak Lawn to US-75 south and I-30 east is the freeway version.

The W220, C215, W221 and R230 cars Highland Park has kept are the core of our ABC work; a strut is $1,400–$2,800.

The daily S-Class and GLS in a Highland Park garage run Airmatic; we find the leaking corner and quote it alone.

R230 SL owners: the hydraulic unit is a dealer item under the 25-year coverage, but pads and rotors at $450–$900 per axle and the counter reset at $120–$180 are done here.

The burning-oil smell in a closed garage on Armstrong Parkway is almost always the oil cooler seals on a 2006–2011 V6 or V8; $650–$1,100.

Cars that cover 3,000 miles a year still reach the two-year B interval; brake fluid, filters and a full inspection catch aging rubber early.

Questions
Read the message first. If it is the SBC hydraulic unit, the dealer should replace it under the 25-year, unlimited-mileage coverage. If it is the wear counter or worn pads and rotors, that is $120–$180 for the reset or $450–$900 per axle here.
The annual Service A regardless of mileage, brake fluid every second year, a battery test, and attention to the things that seize on a vehicle that sits: the parking brake, the differential locks and the door hinges. We also check tire date codes, because a G-Wagen on eight-year-old tires is a Highland Park problem we see often.
Yes. XENTRY and DAS still cover those chassis, and we are honest about which parts are still available before we start. Some items on a 1980s or early 1990s car are now specialist-only, and we will say when a repair is one we should not take on.
Fine outside school hours, slow between 7:30 and 8:30 am and 3:00 and 4:00 pm in term time because of the school zones east of Preston. At those times take Oak Lawn or Lemmon to US-75, south to I-30 east, and exit at Ferguson Road.
