When a W204 or W212 key refuses to turn, the electronic steering lock is the usual suspect, but the ignition switch and the key itself produce the same dead dashboard. We separate them with XENTRY before anything is ordered.

The electronic ignition switch, or EIS, is the module behind the key slot. It reads the key's rolling code over infrared, confirms it against the keys registered to the car, and then releases the rest of the start sequence. On cars with an electronic steering lock, the EIS sends an authorization to the ESL, a motor-driven bolt in the steering column, which withdraws and reports back. Only then does the EIS allow the key to rotate.
Because the sequence is serial, a single failure anywhere in it produces the same result: the key goes in and nothing happens. The ESL is the most common failure point, but a dead key battery, a worn key, a failing EIS or a low vehicle battery can each stop the chain at a different link. Diagnosis is about finding which link. Guessing at the ESL because it is the common answer is how owners buy a steering lock for a car with a flat key battery.
The ESL fitted to the W204 C-Class from 2008, the W207 E coupe and the early W212 E-Class uses a small motor and a control board inside a sealed housing in the column. The motor brushes wear and the board develops failures from heat cycling. Early signs are a key that turns only after a second try or a faint buzz from the column. Eventually the ESL stops answering the EIS entirely.
What the owner experiences is a key that slides in normally but will not rotate past the first position, usually with the dashboard dark. The steering wheel is typically locked. Nothing is wrong with the key or the battery, and the car will not start by any trick.
Later W204s and W212s moved to a revised unit or dropped the mechanical lock, so the fault concentrates in roughly the 2008–2012 build.
Try the second key. If it turns, the first key is the problem and the car can be driven in. Check the battery: a vehicle battery under about 11 volts will leave the EIS dark, and a jump or charge brings it back. Try the key at the driver's door and trunk; if the car unlocks but the ignition is dead, the EIS is receiving the key by radio but not by infrared, which points at the key's infrared emitter or the EIS slot.
If the key will not turn and the dash is dark on both keys with a good battery, the ESL or EIS has failed and the car is not going to move on its own. Before you arrange the tow, email service@mercedesbenzrepair.net with the model year and what you have tried, and we will tell you whether we expect an ESL job so you know what you are towing it in for.
XENTRY talks to the EIS directly even when the key will not turn, provided the car has power. From there we read whether the EIS recognized the key, whether it sent the release to the ESL and whether the ESL answered. A key read without an ESL response is an ESL fault. No key read on either key points at the EIS slot or both keys. A key read followed by an ESL answer but no release points at the ESL mechanism.
We also read the key track, which lists the eight key positions, which are active and which have been disabled or lost. That tells us whether a replacement key can be assigned and informs the key order if one is needed.
The diagnosis is a one-hour visit billed at the published XENTRY range.
FBS is the Mercedes drive authorization system. FBS3 covers most cars from the late 1990s through roughly 2014, including the W204 and W212. FBS4 arrived with the W205 C-Class and W222 S-Class and spread across the range. The distinction matters because the two generations differ in how keys and modules are produced and assigned.
On FBS3 cars, the EIS and ESL can be repaired, replaced and programmed in the shop with XENTRY and the appropriate tooling, and that is the bulk of the work on this page. On FBS4 cars, new keys and certain security modules are produced by Mercedes-Benz for the specific VIN and shipped pre-matched, and the shop's role is installation and the enabling steps the platform allows. We are clear about this up front so no one expects an FBS4 key to be cut and coded over the counter.
Replacement keys for both FBS3 and FBS4 cars are ordered through Mercedes-Benz against the VIN, and Mercedes requires proof of ownership: a current registration or title in your name and a government photo ID matching it. We prepare the order with your documents, the key arrives matched to the car, and we assign it in the EIS and test it. Lead time is typically several business days.
If you have lost all keys, the process is the same but the car must be present for the assignment, and it is worth checking the key track first to confirm the EIS is healthy before buying a key for a car whose ignition switch also needs replacing.
We also recommend disabling a lost key in the EIS when a replacement is assigned, so a found or stolen key cannot start the car.
A repaired ESL keeps the original steering lock function and is the choice when the mechanical bolt is sound and only the motor or board has failed. An emulator replaces the ESL with an electronic module that tells the EIS the lock has released; the column no longer locks mechanically, and the car starts normally. It is the practical route when the ESL mechanism has jammed or when the owner wants to eliminate the failure point.
Both are in the $650–$1,200 band and both are programmed to the EIS in XENTRY. We describe the trade-off and let you choose; there is no wrong answer for most owners, but a car that is parked on the street may be better served by the repaired lock. Either way the car leaves with every original key working and the fault memory clear.
ESL repair or emulator installation is $650–$1,200 and one to three hours. EIS replacement with programming is $1,100–$1,900 and up to four hours, including the key reassignment. A replacement key is $350–$650 including the Mercedes order and programming. Diagnosis alone is $149–$229 and comes with written findings you keep.
The price moves with the key count, whether FBS3 or FBS4 procedures apply, and whether a jammed ESL has damaged the column. All of it is covered for 2 years parts and 2 years labor, up to 24,000 miles, nationwide. For a key order or an ESL appointment, email service@mercedesbenzrepair.net with your VIN.
ESL repairs use new motors and boards specified for the unit; emulators come from established suppliers whose modules pass the EIS plausibility checks without storing faults. Replacement EIS units are genuine or verified used units renewed to your VIN with the platform's procedures.
Keys come only from Mercedes-Benz against your VIN and ownership documents; we do not sell cloned or aftermarket keys. The estimate names the path we propose, repair or emulator, with the price difference, and programming labor is in each line.

Questions
On a 2008–2012 W204 or early W212 with a good battery and both keys behaving the same, it usually is. Before towing, try the second key, check battery voltage, and see whether the key still unlocks the doors. If all that is normal, the lock has most likely failed.
Yes, through the Mercedes-Benz ordering process. We need the VIN, your registration or title and a matching photo ID. The key is produced for your car and we assign it in the EIS when it arrives. On FBS4 models it arrives pre-matched and we handle the assignment steps available to the shop.
It is a module that replaces the failed steering lock and answers the ignition switch as if the lock had released. The car starts and drives normally; you give up the mechanical column lock. Established suppliers' emulators pass the EIS checks without faults; to keep the mechanical lock, we repair the original.
Because Mercedes-Benz requires proof of ownership before releasing a key matched to a VIN, which protects owners from someone ordering a key for a car they do not own. We collect the documents, submit the order and disable any lost key in the EIS. It adds a day or two.
Only after it is renewed to your VIN with the platform's procedures, which is possible on FBS3 cars and is what we mean by a verified used unit. Plugged in as-is, a used EIS stays married to the donor and the car will not start. FBS4 units are Mercedes-supplied.
Possibly; it is not an ESL. The door uses radio and the ignition slot uses infrared, so a key with a failed infrared emitter or a flat battery does exactly this. We test the key against the key track first. A key battery is a minute; a dead emitter means a replacement at $350–$650.
